Garden Trellis Material

When it comes to getting a garden trellis, one interesting question that many people don’t consider enough is the material to build your trellis out of. Most people opt for wood as it is the most immediate substance that comes to mind, but in truth, a garden trellis can be built out of a number of different options. We’ll try and give you a general idea of the advantages of each type of trellis and when you might want to consider it.

First, don’t shy away from metal trellises. Many people fear them because they think metal gets hot and so, having a metal trellis means that the vegetables growing on it will be overheated and die. This is incorrect, and in fact, a metal trellis provides the nice benefit of a strong material that won’t give in under the weight of all the vegetables. Iron is often the metal of choice for garden trellises as it can be weather resistant against rusting, and provides a nice mystical look even when it doesn’t have plants growing on it.

An interesting choice that I often forget is the option for a vinyl trellis. With vinyl you get the advantage of a very low cost material that is resistant to moisture, making it more durable during rainy months. While you can’t paint the vinyl, it is resistant to rotting and rusting, making it something that can last for a long time in your garden with almost no maintenance on your part.

And of course, there is always the option of a wooden garden trellis. These have been around forever and are the ones most people immediately think of when picking a trellis. It provides the natural look, keeping non-foreign materials in your garden, but they can rot or decay over time, so you need to be careful what type of wood you choose. What’s more, a wooden trellis needs to be built much more sturdy to make sure it can withstand the pressure so choose wisely.

In the end, as long as you plan ahead and buy quality material, you should be safe no matter what you decide to make your trellis out of. Whatever you do, just make sure to read up on it thoroughly before deciding on one option over another.
